Over time, the speed of a computer running Microsoft Windows can unfortunately decrease. Suddenly the system will appear to be taking more time to respond to basic actions, including basic startup. If you want to decrease the amount of time that your computer takes to complete basic tasks such as opening up files or folders, running programs or browsing the Internet, consider the following:

#1: Scan your computer for the presence of viruses, spyware, adware and other forms of malware. Every computer running Windows is vulnerable to these types of attacks, and they can cause many problems for your computer hardware and software if you do not find and eliminate them.

#2: Uninstall or clean up anything you are not using. If you have accumulated programs, images and other files that you are no longer using, then you can delete them or uninstall them to free up some space now. Even when not using these files and programs, they can still slow things down so eliminate anything that you are not using any longer.

#3: Run the defragment program on your hard drive. When you have a lot of programs and information on your system, there is a great likelihood that different parts of the same files have been placed in different places throughout your hard drive by the operating system. If this happens to hundreds of different files, it can cause problems. When you defragment your hard drive, it sorts out all the files and places all the information for each of the files in a single place, often positively impacting the speed of your computer as a result.

These are only three of the numerous things that you can do to help speed up your computer when the startup times or loading times are slow. Consider checking to make sure that you have adequate hardware for your needs as well when diagnosing the issues.
