7 Tips to Help Your Computer Run More Efficiently

We all hate it; those times when our computer appears to run at a snail’s pace. Technologically speaking, there was a time when this was common, but it doesn’t have to be the rule today.

Here are 7 tips to help your nerves as well as your computer to run at an efficient speed:

  • Do a disk cleanup and remove temporary files, program files, and error reports. Disk Cleanup is found under System Tools by clicking Start, then All Programs and finally, Accessories. Disk Cleanup is found under the Accessories list.
  • Take care of disc fragmentation that sometimes occurs when you have many files, your free disc space is below 15 percent, or you install something new. The Disk Defragmenter is found under Accessories as well.
  • Repair disk errors. Step-by-step instructions can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265.
  • Scan for viruses, Trojans, and Spyware on a monthly basis by using the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Download it at: http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx
  • Limit the programs that you run when you start up your computer. Find the step by step information you need at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/explore/speed-up-your-pc.aspx.
  • Make sure your hardware is up to speed. After clicking the Start button, type Performance Information and Tools into the search window. Click Re-Run the Assessment from the list you are given.  A score lower than 3 may mean that it’s time to purchase a new PC.
  • Find out how many visual effects can be adequately used on your computer without slowing it down. You must have enough operating memory to support the visual effects you use. To adjust the visual effects, find Adjust Visual Effects under the Performance Information and Tools heading.

When it comes to the speed of your computer, you don’t want to be continually hung up with viruses, far too many files, and outdated hardware; you want your computer to support you in your business as well as in your personal life, and not hold you back.
