Internet shopping is the chosen way of shopping for many people these days. While some don’t think twice about using the internet to make their purchases, there are many others who are concerned about how safe it is to enter your personal information online.
While there are some risks, there are ways to make sure that you and your financial information is safe. As long as you are taking the right precautions, there is no reason you can’t safely shop online.
- Make sure you have the most recent version of your browser. Each company is constantly making advancements in ways to increase security. Making sure you have the latest version will ensure that you are the safest that you can be.
- Make sure you are shopping on sites that have the padlock at the bottom of the window. This lets you know that the site you are using is secure.
- Only shop on sites that have “https” and not just “htttp”. The added “s” indicates that the site is secure.
- Look for the privacy information on the website. Make sure you find this and read it. This information will tell you how the company will use your information and whether or not it will be shared or even sold to other businesses. If anything doesn’t seem right, choose another company to shop with.
- Don’t give out any personal information such as your social security number, bank information, or even your address unless you know exactly where it is going and why they are asking for it.
- Check their customer service. Make sure they have contact information that works. Call their customer service line to make sure there is a person there to help you if you have questions. If you can not get a hold of a person, take your business elsewhere.
- Always use a credit card when you are shopping online and not a debit card. Credit card companies offer extra protection if you run into a problem with fraud or unauthorized charges.
- Use a spyware program to clean your computer regularly.
