Jailbreaking a term that has become synonymous with gaining full control over Apple iOS. The limitation imposed by the network and the manufacturer are removed by this method to access the full features of the phone. A jailbroken iPhone is able to allow users to add applications from sources other than Apple’s app store and adding other themes and extentions. These themes and extensions may or be available in the apple application store or require payment to be made for it. Jailbreaking cannot be compared to sim unlocking where sim from different carriers can be used in a carrier subsidized phone.
Jailbreaks began to be released shortly after iPhone was release in United States. The first Jailbreak was released on June 27th of 2007. Jailbreaks are codes of software that get to the root of Apple iOS and install a custom firmware that is modified from the official firmware, but lacks all the security features that are found in the phone from the network provider. It is possible in iPhone, iPad, iTouch and the new iTV from apple.
Under the recently passed DMCA act of 2010, jailbreaking is made legal in US. But even if it is legal, it dos not mean that it does not void your warranty. Once you jailbreak your iPhone, you can kiss you warranty goodbye.
There are two types of jailbreaks, on Tethered where the phone requires to be connected to a computer each time it needs to be moved into the jailbroken state and the other an untethered state where the phone can be started in the jailbreakstate from the word go. In a tethered jailbreak the kernel is patched. It is estimated that more than ten percent of iPhones in America are jailbroken. It is easy to follow instructions and jailbreak an iPhone by common users as well.
