A laptop has one huge advantage over a desktop. It is mobile. However, mobility is one of the biggest threats to a laptop. It gets misplaced, sat on, stepped on, dropped, and about a few other hundreds of accidents that can befall a laptop. The fragility of the laptop is often forgotten even though it takes hundreds of dollars to replace or weeks lost trying to replace an important part.
The screen is the most fragile of the laptop pieces and the most expensive to replace. A cracked screen means either total replacement or a definite loss of mobility as your laptop has to be hooked up to a monitor to operate. The screen should be closed every time it is not in use. In addition, do not put anything of weight on top of the laptop. Always look before you step or put down objects to make certain your laptop is not in the way. Avoid dropping it if possible and do not try and juggle more than one thing at once.
The number one most damaging accident that happens is liquid spills. The best defense is prevention. Keep your liquids away from your keyboard or off your desk. Put the drinks out of spill range even though they might be convenient placement. Your laptop is far more valuable than a can of coke or a glass of water. Keep your kids far away with your drinks. A closed laptop does offer some protection against spills but will not stop them completely.
Finally, keep track of your laptop when you go out. Install an alarm device to remind you to pick it up or a GPS tracker to keep track of where your laptop is. You might want to lock the case when it is going to be out of your range. Accidents will happen so always back-up your data.
